This month the Art Gallery of Ontario presents Maharaja: The Splendor of India’s Royal Courts, an exhibit featuring objects of exquisite opulence and beauty representing over 300 years of India’s history and culture.
In collaboration with London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, Maharaja’s 200 objects include paintings, tapestries, thrones, weapons and of course, jewels.
Travel back in time with Maharaja to the beginning of the 18th century and work your way up to 1947 – the end of British rule in India and the start of her independence. Finish the exhibit by exploring the legacy of today’s Maharajas and the traditions that continue to hold court.
This exclusive exhibit will be feted on Saturday evening at the Maharaja gala, co-chaired by famed Indian director and screenwriter Deepa Mehta, with the Maharajas of Punjab in attendance.
